How to choose jewelry as a gift

A gifted piece either gets worn or lives in a drawer. The difference comes down to three questions: her style, the occasion, and the size.

The safe choices

Two pieces go with everything and never date: the fine chain and stud earrings. They suit an office day as easily as an evening, layer with other jewelry, and require no knowledge of size. If you are hesitating, start there.

Reading her style without asking

Look at what she already wears. Two clues are enough.

Silver or gold

Most people have a clear preference and stick to it. Check her watch, her everyday earrings: giving gold to someone who only wears silver means giving a piece that stays in its box.

Understated or bold

Some wear a single fine piece; others layer visible ones. Something too discreet for a person who loves statement pieces disappoints just as much as something too loud for someone understated.

By occasion

  • Birthday. The moment for something more personal, chosen for her: a pendant that carries meaning, a stone she loves.
  • Christmas. The safe choices come back into their own. A matching necklace and earrings makes a generous gift with no risk.
  • Valentine's Day. Symbols work — a heart, an infinity, two interlocking rings — as long as you stay true to her usual style.
  • Thank you. Think smaller and perfectly wearable: fine hoops, a simple bracelet.

The size trap

A ring is the riskiest gift: without the exact size it will very likely be exchanged, and the surprise is gone. Prefer a necklace or earrings, which suit everyone. Save the ring for an occasion where you know the size — or give it together with our measuring guide.

And if you get it wrong?

It happens, and it is not a problem. You have fourteen days from delivery to return an unworn piece in its original packaging, and we cover the postage. Knowing this before you buy is worth something: it lets you be a little bolder than the safe choice, at no real risk. Full conditions are on our delivery and returns page.
